Davidson runners Patrick Braxton-Andrew, 28, and Russell Crandall, 40, have been training together in recent months. On Saturday night the pair pushed one another to a 1-2 finish at the 2nd annual Summit Coffee Twilight 5K on a downtown Davidson course that included a luminaria-lit stretch of greenway. Jay Fesperman, 16, of Davidson, has qualified to compete in USA Cycling’s Mountain Bike Gravity National Championships at Beech Mountain, N.C. The race, slated for July 19-22 in Banner Elk, N.C., will bring mountain bikers from throughout the country to compete. Read the full story

James Haycraft finished more than a minute ahead of his closest rival to win the 2012 Tri Latta Triathlon at Latta Plantation Park in Huntersville Saturday. Jennifer Leiser of Charlotte edged 15-year-old Malia Ellington of Cornelius in the women’s race. Meanwhile, Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson on Friday night hosts the Summit Solstice Race + Festival, a 4-mile race followed by a post-race party featuring the local band Cast Iron Filter. DAVIDSON – Vanderbilt outlasted Davidson 87-83 Wednesday night in a game that could have gone the other way if not for missed free throws and poor three-point shooting by the Wildcats.
Davidson set up an exciting finish, erasing most of an 18-point deficit late in the second half on key baskets and foul shots by De’Mon Brooks, JP Kuhlman and Nik Cochran. But after key three-pointers fell short and Clint Mann missed two free throws with a minute left, the Cats could only get within four points in the final seconds. Read the full story
