High Point university claimed the first Big South conference women’s lacrosse championship on Sunday, beating Davidson 9-7 in a rain-soaked game at Richardson Stadium in Davidson. Mary Leonard scored four goals and Emily Cooke had eight points to lead top-seeded Davidson past fourth-seeded Liberty, 17-8, in the semifinals of the inaugural Big South Women’s Lacrosse Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting Friday at Richardson Stadium on the campus of Davidson College.
The Wildcats (11-6) advance to Sunday’s championship match and will play No. 2 seed High Point, which defeated Longwood 17-7 in the second semifinal game, for the Big South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. After a record-setting season, sophomore Emily Cooke was named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year and head coach Kim Wayne was honored for guiding Davidson to the regular season title by being named the league’s coach of the year, as announced Thursday evening following the tournament banquet.

ROCK HILL – Sophomore Emily Cooke set another school single-season record with four points to give her 77 on the season and Davidson claimed the Big South women’s lacrosse regular season title with an 11-5 road win at Winthrop to go unbeaten in league play Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Davidson (10-6, 7-0 Big South) reached the 10-win mark for just the second time in program history. It captured its first league title and grabbed the top seed for the upcoming Big South Tournament held at Davidson College this coming weekend. Read the full story

Davidson College’s runners won three more
races Sunday to help the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish at the Southern Conference track and field championships at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. Junior Andrew Lantz won both the 800 and 1,500 meter runs and senior Demetrios Pagonis captured the 5,000 meters on Sunday, adding that top finish to his victory in Saturday’s 10,000.
