Hundreds of cyclists are expected in Davidson Saturday, Jan. 12, for the 15th annual Polar Bear Metric Century (100k) and Half Century (50k) rides through the North Mecklenburg/Lake Norman area. The Rocky River Road Club hosts the rides, and donates a portion of the proceeds to the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.
Both rides start and finish at Ingersoll-Rand on Beaty Street in Davidson at 10am. Registration opens at 8:30am.
More than 400 cyclists participated in last year’s event, enabling the club to donate $5,600 to the Ada Jenkins Center, along with smaller donations to local churches and non-profits. Read the full story

Sixteen-year-old Jay Fesperman of Davidson won the junior category of USA Cycling’s Mountain Bike Gravity National Championships last weekend at Beech Mountain. The race, July 19-22 in Banner Elk, brought mountain bikers from all over the United States to compete. Read the full story

The 2012 Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon is scheduled for August 25 and the 900 available spots are filling up quickly. Already more than 400 people from North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Florida have registered.
The event begins at 7 a.m. on the beach of the Lake Norman YMCA in Cornelius, 21300 Davidson Street, and includes a 750-meter swim, a 17-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. Read the full story

BANNER ELK, N.C. – Davidson cyclist Jay Fesperman picked up a sixth place in downhill and a seventh place in slalom for his age group Sunday at the USA Cycling 2011 Gravity Mountain Bike Nationals at Beech Mountain.
Fellow Davidsonian Eric Vest was 16th out of 16 in same downhill race, but got a second place in the 2nd category junior slalom race. Read the full story

Donny Forsyth of Charlotte won the men’s division and
Jennifer Leiser of Charlotte topped the women Saturday at the annual
Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon. The early morning event included a 750-meter swim in Lake Cornelius, a 16.8-mile bike ride and 5k run.
