High Point beats Jacksonville in OT for lacrosse title

High Point and Jacksonville took their battle for the National Lacrosse Conference 2011 championship in overtime on Sunday at Davidson’s Richardson Stadium. High Point freshman Christie Dougherty, who had three goals on the day, scored the game winner as the Panthers Point took a 13-12 victory and the title. Justin Reitz of Cornelius cruised to victory Saturday morning in the Ada Jenkins Center “Fire” 5K. The 29-year-old Cornelius runner clocked 17:26 on the course through the West Side and Exit 30 area of Davidson. Jean Hargett, 53, of Mooresville was the top woman finisher, and 14th overall, in a time of 22:25.

A total of 165 runners completed the race, which was part of the third annual “Fire” event, a barbecue festival and fund-raiser to support the center’s programs. Continue Reading

Win puts lacrosse team in tournament semifinal

About the tournament

Davidson College is hosting the National Lacrosse Conference tournament this weekend, Apr. 29-May 1. The Wildcats also hosted the tourney last year, reaching the finals with wins over Howard and Jacksonville and losing the title to Longwood, 17-9. This year Davidson (5-11 overall and 4-3 in the NLC), was seeded fourth coming in to the event.
