A trio of area runners has organized a 2.62-hour run in Charlotte Sunday to honor victims of the Boston Marathon attacks and to support a local family directly affected. Meanwhile, this weekend brings the annual “Miles for Marnie” 5K and fun run, raising money for the Marnie Jude pediatric cancer foundation. And Community School of Davidson’s athletics boosters are the beneficiaries again this year of the Town Day Road Race, on the Davidson Village Green May 4. See our Running Calendar below. Davidson College’s runners won three more
races Sunday to help the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish at the Southern Conference track and field championships at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. Junior Andrew Lantz won both the 800 and 1,500 meter runs and senior Demetrios Pagonis captured the 5,000 meters on Sunday, adding that top finish to his victory in Saturday’s 10,000.

STATESBORO, Ga. – Davidson’s Demetrios Pagonis wont the 10,000 meters and teammate Daniel Samet was third to help Davidson finish Day 1 of the Southern Conference track & field championships in fourth place.
Samford leads the men meet with 72 points after Day 1 of the meet at the Eagle Track & Field Complex at Erk Russell Athletic Park. Appalachian State leads on the women’s side with 71.5 points. The Wildcat women stand in eighth place. Read the full story

Twenty-year-old Hagood Grantham of Greenville, S.C., ran away with the 5K and Davidson’s Martin Harrison easily won the 10K at Saturday’s third annual Pawz Too Run and Dog Walk on the Davidson VIllage Green. The event was a fundraiser for local nonprofit Friends of the Animals. Meanwhile, the running calendar is in the midst of a busy month, including this Saturday’s Run for Hope and Healing 5K in Huntersville, and Kicks for Kids 5K at Jetton Park in Cornelius. And in two weeks, the Miles for Marnie 5K returns for another year, raising money for the Marnie Jude Foundation. Read the full story

A crisp spring morning and cash prizes welcomed runners to the inaugural American Two Mile Road Race at Jetton Park in Cornelius. The road through the park was a “phenomenal setup” for the approximately 70 local and out-of-state athletes, said Anthony Famiglietti of Davidson, the race co-director.
Darren Brown of Knoxville was the overall winner in 9:23. “The whole first mile was downhill,” Brown said, which helped him gain an early lead.
Heidi Dahl, also of Knoxville, was the overall female winner, in 10:13. “That was fun,” Dahl said afterward, as she headed for a free massage. Read the full story
