Ohio developer Goldberg Companies/GCI Residential over the holidays started work on “Legacy Cornelius,” a multi-family complex off Westmoreland Road that has been in the plans for almost a decade. The developer plans to build 168, 2-story condo units and 77 townhouse units, as well as a pool and amenities building.
According to Town Planner Karen Floyd, the town approved plans for the 41.5-acre site at the northwest corner of I-77 and Westmoreland Road in 2002, that included a road connecting Westmoreland Road to the Westmoreland neighborhood, but the developer decided to hold off on building at that time. He was waiting to see what happened with other construction projects, such as Augustalee, a nearby 104-acre site once slated to become a mixed-use development, Ms. Floyd said. The Augustalee property was foreclosed upon in August 2010, and plans for Legacy Cornelius gained steam.
The town approved final construction drawings for Legacy Cornelius last year. The plan is to build the whole complex at once, Ms. Floyd said, beginning with the five multi-family condo units closest to Westmoreland Road. The townhouse units will back up to the Westmoreland neighborhood.
The multi-family units are expected to be completed this year.
