Margretha Pinkney is on a mission to make sure we all have proper smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms in our homes. It's a mission motivated by tragedy: Last October, she lost her 9-year-old son Nikko'Las in a fire at their Huntersville home. Cornelius families this week are being offered a chance to get free smoke alarms to avoid a similar tragedy.

Former District 41 state senate candidates Troy Stafford and Robby Benton this week said they endorse Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte for the seat. After a close finish in the primary election May 8, Mayor Tarte and Huntersville business owner John Aneralla will face each other for a runoff vote in July, and Mr. Stafford and Mr. Benton are encouraging their supporters to vote for Mayor Tarte. Meanwhile, Mr. Aneralla sent a letter to County Commissioners Tuesday supporting an independent audit of the 2011 property revaluation. On our ELECTION page >>

The Iredell County Firefighter’s Association’s pink fire truck will be featured on the Velocity Channel tonight at 9 p.m. The retired truck was upfitted this winter as a teaching tool, to raise awareness of breast cancer and support cancer research.

J.V. Washam Elementary School students will have new playground and outdoor learning areas when they return to school in August. The school’s “Hawk’s Nest” project got a leg up this week with a $30,000 grant from Lowe’s.

The Lake Norman Flotilla 26-01 of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Morningside Marina will offer free vessel safety checks Saturday, May 12, on the lake in Troutman.
