Amaryllis “Amy” Vaughn Linderman, 92, of Huntersville, died June 16, 2011, at Presbyterian Hospital. Born Dec. 27, 1918, in Duncan, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Thomas Caldwell Vaughn and Alice Lancaster Vaughn. She graduated from Asheville Teacher’s College with a B.S. in education and received an M.S. from Furman University.  She retired as an elementary school teacher and was a charter member of Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church. Mary Fran Coultas, 70, died June 17, 2011, at her home in Charlotte, after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer. She was a loving, caring, spirit-filled wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to everyone she met.

Mrs. Coultas was born Nov. 23, 1940, in Pontiac, Ill. to Robert John “RJ” and Lorraine Cushing. She earned her B.A. from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill., and was a member of the Board of Directors at the Graduate Realtors Institute and Vice President of the Illinois Board of Realtors. Lawrence Hahn Duke, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully at White Oak Manor of Waxhaw on June 15, 2011. 

He was born Oct. 11, 1920, the second son of the late Kinchen Asbury and Lillie Hahn Duke, and came from a long line of devout Methodists, including  Robert Laban Abernethy, founder and president of Rutherford College, and Rev. Daniel Asbury, a circuit riding minister who founded Rehobeth UMC and held the first camp meetings at Rock Springs camp grounds.
 
During World War II, Mr. Duke was a communications specialist with the 354th Fighter Group serving both the 8th and 9th Air Forces. His group flew P-51 Mustangs and their service ended in Nuremberg, Germany. He continued to serve his country when was called to active duty from the reserves during the Korean War. He attended his squadron’s reunions until he was physically unable to do so. Continue Reading

Florence “Flo” Fields Greene, 74, of Stanley, N.C., died Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Presbyterian Hospital.  Born June 20, 1936, in Dunkirk, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Dennis Charles Fields and Loretta Agnes Carrus Fields.

She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from State University of New York at Fredonia and began her 47-year career in education.  During her years in the New York schools systems and Charlotte  Mecklenburg Schools system, she held positions as a teacher, reading specialist, curriculum specialist, literacy facilitator, observation expert, assistant principal and principal. Frances Elizabeth Barnette Beard, 78, of Huntersville, N.C., died peacefully June 16, 2011, at The Brian Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Mrs. Beard was born Dec. 8, 1932, to the late Samuel Jones Barnette and Norma Jane Gilbert Barnette, of Huntersville, and lived most of her life in the Huntersville area. She retired from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools after 30 years as the Food Services Manager at North Mecklenburg High School, where her wonderful cooking creations delighted many. She also enjoyed traveling with Grady to the Members of Muroc Veterans of World War II reunions and she was a member of Huntersville United Methodist Church. Thad Calloway Campbell, 79, died June 14, 2011. Born Dec. 5, 1931, in Alexander County to the late Charlie and Lucy Campbell, he was a member of the Sunshine Sunday School class at Peninsula Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon. He was a ham radio operator and part of the American Radio League, and served his country in the US Marine Corps. Continue Reading
