Lauren Boyce Woodall Roady, loving wife, daughter, and sister, died on Saturday, Dec. 8, in an accident in Lexington, Kentucky. She was 27. An exceptionally talented runner, Lauren was in Lexington to compete in the USA Track and Field Cross Country Club Championships with the Georgetown Running Club, her race team.

Lauren inspired all who were fortunate enough to know her. She loved unequivocally and was utterly unselfish. She did not waste a second of her too-short life. Everything Lauren did, she did intensely and completely. Lauren rose at dawn to run, spent her Metro commute to work emailing her friends and family, excelled at work, exercised again at lunch, called her parents, Jack Woodall and Sharon Boyce, on the walk home from the Metro, and spent her evenings deep in conversation with the husband she so dearly loved, Peter Roady.

Lauren was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on Oct. 20, 1985. Her parents, Jack and Sharon, had waited a while to have children, but Peter and all the other people whose lives Lauren transformed are glad they got around to it. Lauren gave them their money’s worth. The fire within her burned strong from her first moments.

When she learned to read, very early, she read through practically the entire library. She read so much she was banned from her school library, much to her mother’s consternation. Lauren would snatch the day’s reading quiz off the teacher’s desk on the way into class and would complete it before class began. She then spent the rest of the class reading whatever she wanted. By the time she was 18, Lauren had read ten times more books than most people will read in 80 years.

Lauren and her younger brother Nicholas had a happy childhood with Jack and Sharon and under the careful eyes and exemplary role modeling of their maternal grandmother, Virginia Boyce. They spent many wonderful weekends at Cade’s Cove, one of Lauren’s favorite places and somewhere she always returned to run when she visited Knoxville. Virginia was a third parent, and her positive influence on Lauren was immense. Throughout her life, Lauren drew upon Virginia’s strength, resolve, and spirit.

Lauren Woodall Roady posed for a graduation photo with her horse in front of the Chambers Building in 2008. (Elizabeth Arrellano photo)

Lauren loved horses from the time she was a little girl. When Lauren was 9, her parents gave her the gift she always wanted: riding lessons. Riding changed Lauren’s life. Pony Club taught her leadership, and she won the Pony Club’s annual award at age 11. Throughout high school and college she dedicated herself to eventing and took her horse, Will, to the highest level. Along the way, she made many lifelong friends and admirers.

Lauren first met Peter at Davidson College. She was two years younger, but they had a class together and bumped into each other around campus. They did not date at the time, and lost touch until reconnecting thanks to a mutual friend in the summer of 2008 who recognized the potential for a perfect match. They began corresponding regularly and spent Labor Day Weekend together in Cambridge, Massachusetts where Peter was attending graduate school. Although Lauren had only just started New York University (NYU) Law School and they would have to begin their relationship long distance, Peter knew almost immediately that Lauren was the woman he would marry. She was the kindest, most thoughtful person he had ever met.

After a conversation with her parents, he proposed to Lauren in a meadow in Oregon overlooking Mount Hood in August 2010. Lauren spent the fall semester at Georgetown Law School to be with Peter. At Georgetown, Lauren’s professors honored her as the top student in two of her classes. Lauren returned to New York in the spring and the couple endured one last semester of long-distance while she finished her degree at NYU Law in 2011. Lauren moved to Washington and began building a stellar reputation as an attorney at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to be with Peter forever.

Growing up, Lauren and her family traveled often to Cumberland Island, Georgia to camp and stay at the Greyfield Inn. Lauren and her family knew this would be the place for an unforgettable wedding weekend with closest friends and family. Peter had never been, so Lauren took Peter and his parents, Steve and Celia Roady, to visit the island in October 2010. All were instantly taken with this magical place. Lauren and Peter married at Greyfield on Oct. 6, 2012, and spent a blissful weekend with their friends and family enjoying the island and each others’ company. The newlyweds honeymooned in Provence in the South of France, sharing many wonderful uninterrupted hours together.

Lauren made Peter feel loved and appreciated every minute of the more than four years they had together. She made him a better person. He loved her deeply. He is eternally grateful for the time they had together and the transformative impact she had on his life.

She is survived by her husband Peter Roady, parents Jack Woodall and Sharon Boyce, brother Nicholas Woodall, uncle David Woodall, aunt Janet Bradshaw, cousins Melanie Bradshaw Farrell and Stephanie Bradshaw Cummings, parents-in-law Steve and Celia Roady, and sister-in-law Laura Roady Capito. She will be deeply missed.

Family and friends will gather in Knoxville on Saturday, Dec. 15, to celebrate Lauren’s life, beginning with a 2-mile run/walk at 10AM at Lakeshore Park. The day will continue with a service at 1PM at Westminster Presbyterian Church. We will lay Lauren to rest immediately thereafter.

Lauren’s family asks that memorials in her honor be sent to the Lauren Woodall Roady Fund at the Friends of the Smokies, an organization which helps maintain the parks like Cade’s Cove where Lauren loved running and spending time with family and friends.
Lauren Woodall Roady, a 2008 Davidson College graduate and attorney for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington, died Saturday night after being struck by a fire truck in Lexington, Ky. She was 27. Ms. Roady also was a runner, and had been in Lexington for Saturday’s USATF Club Cross Country National Championships.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported on its Kentucky.com website that the accident happened around 10:05pm Saturday night and involved a fire truck that was in routine traffic on its way to pick up firefighters. The newspaper said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police report offered few details and police are investigating, according to the Herald-Leader. The paper quoted Lexington Mayor Jim Gray as saying that a full report on the accident might not be available until early next year.

<img class="size-full wp-image-49342" title="121012Woodall,Lauren" src="http://corneliusnews.net/obituaries/files/2012/12/121012WoodallLauren.jpg" alt=" Lauren Woodall was an avid rider, and actually took up running to help her horsemanship.
Ms. Roady was married two months ago to fellow Davidson grad Peter Roady. After leaving Davidson, the Tennessee native went to law school, graduating from New York University Law School in 2011. She began work at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff in August 2011, according to her Linked In profile.

She had taken up running only recently, and finished 149th in Saturday’s national club cross country race, among 222 finishers, competing for the Georgetown Running Club of Washington. In a note on its website, the club said this:

Lauren was new to the sport of running and she showed amazing talent and promise, on top of an enthusiastic and engaging personality. While training with us for the last nine months, she lowered virtually all of her personal records dramatically, nearly every time she raced. Nobody worked harder or trained smarter than Lauren. But moreover, her enthusiasm for the sport she had so recently embraced and her quiet, but strong presence inspired the whole women’s team to push a little harder in every workout. Her fresh approach and constant improvement embodied the joy of training and racing. Lauren’s steady, inspiring, and cheerful presence will forever be missed.

See more about Lauren’s running career on the Georgetown Running Club page.

SERVICES

Family and friends will gather in Knoxville, Tennessee on Saturday, Dec. 15, to celebrate Lauren’s life, beginning with a 2-mile run/walk at 10am at Lakeshore Park (6410 South Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN). A memorial service is planned at 1pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church (6500 Northshore Drive Knoxville, TN). A reception and burial will follow.
