The Town of Davidson has received a three-year, $350,000 grant from the federal Centers for Disease Control to begin regular studies of how planning and policies affect public health, and to develop what town officials are calling “healthy community” initiatives.”
The town is one of a half-dozen places across the country – and by far the smallest community – to share a total of $8.4 million, or $2.8 million a year for three years, in the Health Impact Assessment to Foster Community Design grant program. Other grants went to the San Francisco Department of Public Health; the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; the Oregon Department of Human Services; the Douglas County Health Department in Omaha, Neb.; and the Baltimore City Health Department. Nearly 26M Americans now have the disease, and one-third of adults now have prediabetes, new estimates show

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes, according to new estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes raises a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Blood providers in the Charlotte area said this week blood donations are down sharply this month, primarily because of bad weather, and they’re hoping donors will respond to help fill the gap.
Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) and the American Red Cross Greater Carolinas Chapter issued alerts about the blood shortage this week.
