Twice a month, the Lake Norman area arts community packs in to local fitness studio Kadi Fit in downtown Cornelius for Bella Love Inc.’s open mic night.
Local performers are in abundance, like this week’s opening act, Carter Jones. Jones, a musician with a soulful voice that belies her age – 12 – took the stage for the first time Thursday night. Read the full story

Works by Mary Crow (dog painting) and DAG (“Thelonius Monk”) are on display in Davidson this month.

The artists behind two exhibits currently on view in Davidson will be in the spotlight at receptions this week. On Wednesday night, Summit Coffee on Main Street will host a reception for David Alan Goldberg, who goes by “DAG,” and his exhibit “Carolina Revelries: Legends and Landmarks.” And on Friday afternoon, there’s a reception at Davidson Town Hall for painter Mary Crow, whose work is there this month. Also coming up: Mooresville Artist Guild’s 35th annual Spring Artfest.

An exhibit of oil paintings by Davidson College art professor Nathaniel Rogers will open with a reception Wednesday night, March 14, at 7 p.m. in the Van Every Gallery of the Belk Visual Arts Center at Davidson College. The exhibit, “Secret Things, Tiny Rituals,” includes 20 paintings depicting figures in fairy-tale or theatrical settings, but in the midst of unexpected behavior, such as setting fires, shooting weapons, or using knives or hammers.

Brad Thomas, Davidson College’s art gallery director since 1999, has found a new perch: As curator of contemporary art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Mint officials announced Thursday that he will start the new job Monday, Jan 23, at the museum in downtown Charlotte.
On Wednesday night, Mr. Thomas was at the college’s Van Every/Smith Galleries, saying farewells and accepting pats on the back from friends during an opening for an exhibit of recent acquisitions that shows the stamp he has put on Davidson’s permanent collection. Read the full story

“The Beautiful World of Watercolor,” an exhibit of watercolors by local artist and instructor Jim Kerr and his students will open Friday, June 24, at in the rotunda of Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St.
The exhibit will be on view from June 24 to July 15, weekdays 8-5. The public is invited to meet the artists and instructor and enjoy refreshments at the opening reception on Friday, June 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., also at Town Hall. Read the full story
