Charlotte Symphony returns to Bailey Road park this Saturday for an Independence Day concert and fireworks.
The Cornelius Outdoor Cinema Series continues Thursday night with a screening of “Jack and Jill” at Kenton Place. Summer programs are in full swing with story times for kids at Davidson and Cornelius libraries, and magician “Fish the Magish” appearing Tuesday at Davidson library. It’s a good week for theater: The musical comedy “Crazy for You”continues at Davidson College, while the comic play “Garden Party” opens at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. If these shows have you yearning to do a little acting yourself, auditions for this fall’s Carolina Renaissance Festival are Wednesday and Saturday at Ballantyne Arts Center in Charlotte. On Saturday, Davidson Farmer’s Market has a Beers & Brats Brunch, and the Sizzling Summer Craft-actular craft show comes to Sadler Square Shopping Center in Davidson. At week’s end, Fourth of July celebrations begin. There’s an Independence Day Regatta Saturday and Sunday at Lake Norman Yacht Club in Mooresville. The Cornelius Concerts in the Park has the Charlotte Symphony and fireworks at Bailey Road Park Saturday. Then on Sunday, you can dress up and march in Davidson’s small-town parade to the Green, where Shaggie Maggie plays a Concert on the Green.

George and Ira Gershwin may well be known as the master composers of rhythm, and Davidson Community Players deserve accolades bringing the Gershwins’ sound to Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall in a production of “Crazy for You.” A rollicking troupe of tap dancing singers frolicked across the stage for a couple of hours Thursday evening to earn a standing ovation from a cheering, full-house opening night audience. You’ll have four chances this weekend to see Davidson Community Players’ “Crazy for You,” the award-winning musical comedy by George and Ira Gershwin that opens Thursday night at Davidson College Duke Family Performance Hall. Head over to Kannapolis on Friday for Movies in the Park with “How to Train Your Dragon.” On Saturday morning, enjoy local fare at the Davidson Farmer’s Market and go on World of Wonder’s tree walk outing. Summit Coffee presents live music all weekend long; or for music of a different flavor, the First Baptist Church in Huntersville is hosting a youth choir singing traditional hymns. And don’t forget to check out the showtimes at right for Our Town Cinemas in Davidson, where “Brave” opens this weekend.

Davidson Community Players’ production of “Crazy for You,” a Tony Award-winning Gershwin musical filled with familiar tunes, opens Thursday, June 21, and runs through Saturday, June 30, at Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College. Meanwhile, on a more intimate scale, Christian Hamilton’s new play “Garden Party: The Adventures of Adam & Eve,” will run June 28-July 5 at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. Head out Monday to the River Run Golf Club in Davidson for the Curry Celebrity Golf Classic. You’ll be able to see sports stars such Muggsy Bogues, Dale Jarrett, Muhsin Muhammad — and of course Dell and Stephen Curry. Other outside events this week include the Advanced Civil War camp at Latta Plantation and a tree walk in Davidson. Several government meetings are on the agenda this week. There’s a public hearing Monday on the Cornelius budget, a meeting of the Davidson Design Review Board on Wednesday and a meeting of the Cornelius Architectural Review Board on Friday. Musical comedy “Crazy for You” opens Thursday and runs through Sunday this week, and Summit Coffee hosts its Summit Songwriters Showcase on Thursday. Watch for road work on I-77 – actually over I-77. Preservation work begins Monday on 15 bridges, including four crossings in Huntersville.

Librarian Rosanna Losee discusses “1900-1939 – A Time for Change” Thursday in the first program in her three-part series on American history and culture at Cornelius Public Library. Local libraries also have story times for babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Beautiful scenes of Lake Norman will be the spotlight Tuesday with the opening of Jan Black’s exhibit “Sunsets, Sailboats & Scenery” at the Cornelius Arts Center. Stand Up NC holds its monthly meeting this Wednesday, with guest speakers Dan Forest, candidate for lieutenant governor of North Carolina; Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby and Iredell Co. District Court Judge Julia Lynn Gullet. Looking toward the weekend, the “Car Craze” comedy plays continue Thursday through Saturday at Warehouse PAC in Cornelius. Reed Gold Mine is hosting a gold-panning competition and the “Pan-O-Lympics,” games open to youngsters and adults alike. And W.A. Hough High School graduates its first class this Saturday.
