Heaven’s Reign sings Friday night in the Cornelius Concert Series, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
An action-packed weekend lies ahead in the Lake Norman area, from Davidson basketball games to a lecture on the “Science of Speed” at Davidson College. The college on Friday also hosts the annual “Green Ball,” a contra dance and fundraiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy. On the music scene: Soprano Mary Kathryn Withers sings a concert Sunday as part of the Music at St. Alban’s series, and the local southern gospel quartet Heaven’s Reign performs Friday night in the Cornelius Concert Series at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. Other live music is on tap at local venues including Summit Coffee and Rusty Rudder. For kids, there’s a Fairy House Festival Saturday at Latta Plantation Nature Preserve, and drop-in events Friday and Saturday at the Cornelius Arts Center.
Meanwhile, on the big screen, Our Town Cinemas has “Lincoln,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Lincoln” for one more night, along with “Warm Bodies” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” On Friday, they’ll add “Identity Thief,” “The Impossible,” “Safe Haven” and “A Good Day to Die Hard.” See the showtimes at right on this page. The Vianello Trio performs Saturday in the Cornelius Concert Series at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Live music tops the schedule of events this weekend, from opera to a classical trio, and an open mic night at Kadi Fit to a CD-release party for Davidson’s Rusty Knox Saturday at Summit Coffee. Warehouse Performing Arts Center has one more performance Thursday of “The Last Five Years,” a concert version of Jason Robert Brown’s contemporary musical about the five-year life of a marriage. There’s a winter tailgate market Saturday morning at Davidson Farmer’s Market, and local residents plan a Day of Service Saturday at Ada Jenkins Center. Meanwhile, Davidson College’s basketball teams have several games, including the annual Kicks from Cats fundraising night Saturday, when College of Charleston plays the men’s team at Belk Arena.

How’s this sound for a fall weekend in the Lake Norman area: High school football and soccer playoffs, a big church barbecue, and health-related community events at the Lake Norman YMCA and on the Davidson Green; the Renaissance festival and the final weekend of the Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill, both in Huntersville; and three theatrical productions on area stages: “A Month in the Country” at Davidson College, “Snow Angel” at W.A. Hough High School, and “American History: Abridged” at Warehouse Performing Arts Center.
Saturday brings the 73rd annual barbecue at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius, and the 2nd annual Chef Challenge at the Davidson Farmer’s Market, where the winter market season opens. Pine Lake Prep hosts a Walk for Stomach Cancer on its campus in Mount Mourne, while Davidson’s suicide prevention committee hosts a community gathering on the Village Green Saturday. At the YMCA, it’s Spirit, Mind and Body day. Details on those and other events this week are below.

Huntersville Brass plays at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church
It’s Halloween weekend, with the Downtown Davidson Halloween March, a Ghost Walk at Latta Plantation, and the Davidson Historical Society’s Ghost Stories at Beaver Dam, with storyteller Sauni Wood. Downtown Charlotte has a Halloween bar crawl and the Gravediggers Ball. The high school football regular season wraps up this week with a game between Hough and Mallard Creek for the I-Meck 4A title. The Cornelius Concert Series at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church hosts the Huntersville Brass Saturday. Lake Norman Christian School’s Autumn Blast is Saturday in Davidson, and several local middle-schoolers have organized their annual Think Pink Dog Show on the Davidson Green Saturday as well. Meanwhile, it’s Family Weekend at Davidson College, where events include the opening of the theater department’s production of “A Month in the Country,” free concerts by the Symphony and Chorale, and the Jazz Ensemble, and a Saturday football game vs. Butler. The Barefoot Movement and Owen Poteat will play the first concert in the series “Not Strictly Bluegrass – BBQ, Bluegrass and Beyond!” Saturday at Cornelius Presbyterian Church.
Public meetings fill the schedule this week, including the Lake Norman Marine Commission, North Mecklenburg Republican Women, Davidson Town Board, and the Lake Norman Teen Council. The fourth annual Charlotte Area Farm Tour is this Saturday and Sunday and the Run for Green half-marathon, 10K and 5k races will be held on Saturday, along with the Green Day festivalon the Village Green. And two Cornelius concert series begin: “Not Strictly Bluegrass – BBQ, Bluegrass and Beyond!” at Cornelius Presbyterian Church on Saturday, and the Cornelius Concert Series with Lakeside Drive on Sunday at Mt. Zion United Methodist. Also Sunday, the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble play a Concert on the Green. And the Amazing Maize Maze is open all weekend at Rural Hill in Huntersville.

Outdoor concerts are on the schedule this weekend, with an ’80s Night in the Park at Bailey Road Park Saturday night and a Davidson Concert on the Green Sunday night. Indoors, the North Mecklenburg Community Chorus has “Bella Notte,” three nights of Italian-inspired music. Two days of grueling running – if you can call it that – are ahead during the Warrior Dash at Rural Hill Farm in Huntersville. The weekend also brings lots of other live music, Davidson College graduation events, and a day of sailing for special needs people Saturday at the NC Sailing & Rowing Center. The Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center 5K and local food picnic is Saturday morning in downtown Davidson. And Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius celebrates is 185th birthday Sunday. Read the full story
