The Barefoot Movement and Owen Poteat will play the first concert in the series “Not Strictly Bluegrass – BBQ, Bluegrass and Beyond!” Saturday at Cornelius Presbyterian Church.
Public meetings fill the schedule this week, including the Lake Norman Marine
Commission, North Mecklenburg Republican Women, Davidson Town Board, and the Lake Norman Teen Council. The fourth annual Charlotte Area Farm Tour is this Saturday and Sunday and the Run for Green half-marathon, 10K and 5k races will be held on Saturday, along with the Green Day festivalon the Village Green. And two Cornelius concert series begin: “Not Strictly Bluegrass – BBQ, Bluegrass and Beyond!” at Cornelius Presbyterian Church on Saturday, and the Cornelius Concert Series with Lakeside Drive on Sunday at Mt. Zion United Methodist. Also Sunday, the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble play a Concert on the Green. And the Amazing Maize Maze is open all weekend at Rural Hill in Huntersville.

What’s your fancy this weekend? It’s a busy one, from sports to music to a Davidson Wildcats fan day. At midday Saturday, Cornelius Presbyterian Church is hosting its Bluegrass & BBQ festival, featuring Monroe-based combo Deeper Shade of Blue. Davidson College’s Wildcat Fan Day is Saturday on the Davidson Village Green. The newly
formed North Carolina Baroque Orchestra performs Friday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House. The International Tournament of Champions wheelchair basketball tourney continues, with championship games Saturday at Lake Norman Charter School. The weekly Davidson Farmer’s Market is in downtown Davidson Saturday morning.

Our calendar this week includes a variety of outdoor concerts and film, a kids’ theater production, and fundraisers. On Tuesday,
Tenders Restaurant will donate a portion of sales from 5 and 8 p.m. to the Bailey Middle School Orchestra. Tuesday also is National Night Out, with events in Davidson and Cornelius to promote community safety and crime prevention. Cornelius’ Outdoor Cinema Series continues on Wednesday with “Tangled” in Smithville Park. Children’s Theater of Charlotte’s Taradiddle Players visit both Davidson and Cornelius public libraries for free performances on Friday. Cornelius Presbyterian Church’s annual Bluegrass Festival returns Saturday with Homeward Bound. Old Folks Barnstock music festival is Friday, while the original Barnstock, for folks 15 and older, is on Saturday, at the Brown Farm in Huntersville farm. Country Night in the Park is in Cornelius on Saturday with free musical entertainment and kid’s activities and Billy Jones & the Pocket are playing a Concert on the Green in Davidson on Sunday.

"Grave Comedies" opens Thursday at Warehouse PAC in Cornelius.

A new play festival opens this weekend at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius, featuring a collection of short plays called “Grave Comedies.” Rural Hill in Huntersville will be celebrating and re-enacting the 1761 wedding of the historic site’s founders on Saturday, and there’s a jazz Concert on the Green in Davidson on Sunday. Saturday brings feasting: a flapjacks feast for W.A. Hough High’s bands and a Community Cookout at Cornelius Presbyterian Church. Davidson hosts a pair of Saturday events – the Loopy for a Cause 24-hour run for Batten’s Disease research, on the Davidson Village Green, and the Collier Lilly Ride 4 Life at Davidson College, to raise money and awareness for organ donation.

Cornelius Presbyterian Church hosts its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser April 30 from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the church youth ministry and outreach programs, including the Sunday School, the “Passport to Adventure” parents’ nights out, and the new children’s music program, among others.

Tickets are $5 and include all-you-can-eat pancakes, bacon, sausage and drinks. The church is located at 21209 Catawba Ave., on the corner of West Catawba and Church St.

The church hosts a Community Easter Egg Hunt at 2 p.m. April 23 on the church grounds. The event is open to all members of the community, and is for toddlers and children up to twelve years old.

“Bluegrass Saturdays,” a weekly series of bluegrass concerts on the lawn of Cornelius Presbyterian Church, kicks off this Saturday, Aug. 7, at 11:30 a.m. with a performance by Homeward Bound.
The series continues the following two Saturdays with appearances by A Deeper Shade of Blue, and Davidson Express. Concerts are free and run from 11:30 to 1 p.m.
