weekend calendar bugFrom books to theater to music to the Amazing Maize Maze, it’s another busy weekend in the Lake Norman area. Summit Coffee’s Songwriter’s Showcase is Thursday, featuring Nashville folk artist Hannah Miller, Paul Finnican, and host Rob McHale with special guest Shantell Ogden of Nashville.  The Lake Norman Beer Festival is Saturday at Kenton Place.  The 48th anniversary Festival in the Park is Friday through Sunday in Charlotte, with food, live music, artists’ booths and kids’ activities. Cornelius Presbyterian Church’s Bluegrass and BBQ music fest continues Saturday morning with Rusty Knox and Michael Reno Harrell. Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius opens a production of the “black-hearted” comedy “Smell of the Kill” Thursday through Sunday and the Davidson Farmer’s Market is on Saturday morning.

Aldridges play bluegrass; 70s Night in the Park

Cornelius Presbyterian Church hosts another installment in its Bluegrass and BBQ series on Saturday morning, featuring the Marion-based duo Darin and Brooke Aldridge. On Saturday night, Da Throwback Band plays 70s Nigweekend calendar bught in the Park, at Bailey Road Park. We have two birthdays this weekend: On Thursday, Aquesta Bank celebrates No. 5 with a Business After Hours reception, while public radio station WFAE-FM in Charlotte hosts an open house Friday to mark its 30th anniversary. Summit Coffee in Davidson has its Songwriters Showcase on Thursday, and the weekend wraps up with a Concert on the Green with the Rusty Knox Band.

What’s your fancy this weekend? It’s a busy one, from sports to music to a Davidson Wildcats fan day. At midday Saturday, Cornelius Presbyterian Church is hosting its Bluegrass & BBQ festival, featuring Monroe-based combo Deeper Shade of Blue. Davidson College’s Wildcat Fan Day is Saturday on the Davidson Village Green. The newly weekend calendar bugformed North Carolina Baroque Orchestra performs Friday at Davidson College Presbyterian Church Congregation House. The International Tournament of Champions wheelchair basketball tourney continues, with championship games Saturday at Lake Norman Charter School. The weekly Davidson Farmer’s Market is in downtown Davidson Saturday morning.

Barnstock and country music outdoors, kids’ theater


Our calendar this week includes a variety of outdoor concerts and film, a kids’ theater production, and fundraisers. On Tuesday, this week buttonTenders Restaurant will donate a portion of sales from 5 and 8 p.m. to the Bailey Middle School Orchestra. Tuesday also is National Night Out, with events in Davidson and Cornelius to promote community safety and crime prevention. Cornelius’ Outdoor Cinema Series continues on Wednesday with “Tangled” in Smithville Park. Children’s Theater of Charlotte’s Taradiddle Players visit both Davidson and Cornelius public libraries for free performances on Friday. Cornelius Presbyterian Church’s annual Bluegrass Festival returns Saturday with Homeward Bound. Old Folks Barnstock music festival is Friday, while the original Barnstock, for folks 15 and older, is on Saturday, at the Brown Farm in Huntersville farm. Country Night in the Park is in Cornelius on Saturday with free musical entertainment and kid’s activities and Billy Jones & the Pocket are playing a Concert on the Green in Davidson on Sunday.

Davidson Express opens Mooresville Concerts this Sat.

The fourth season of Mooresville Concerts will open this Saturday night, Oct. 9, and organizers have turned to Davidson for the opening act. The six-member group Davidson Express, whose members are from throughout the area, plays a mix of bluegrass and original music, and recently produced their first recording, titled “Yuppie Hootennany.”

Saturday’s concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at Charles Mack Citizens’ Center in downtown Mooresville. (Ticket information below.)

Freshmen arrive, service walk, Senior Luau, soccer

this week buttonThis week features a Senior Luau and fund-raiser Wednesday at the North Meck Senior Center on West Catawba in Cornelius. All proceeds will go towards the creation of new programs for area seniors. Davidson College freshmen (Class of 2014) will arrive on campus Wednesday for orientation activities that include the annual Service Walk around town Saturday. Cannon School plays its inaugural home football game this Friday vs. North Raleigh Christian. Saturday brings the weekly Davidson Farmers Market downtown next to Town Hall. And the local bluegrass/folk band Davidson Express plays in the Bluegrass Saturdays series at Cornelius Presbyterian Church Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Those events and more below, or see our day-by-day calendar at right.
