A small crowd gathered at Davidson College Thursday to dedicate “Waves III,” the newest addition to the college’s outdoor sculpture collection. The work by contemporary Spanish artist Jaume Plensa is a stainless-steel figure, seated on stone and fashioned from letters and characters representing languages across the globe.
The guests included President Carol Quillen and other college staff, students and art lovers, and alumnus Jim Pepper, of the Davidson Class of 1965, who donated the work. Read the full story

Works by Mary Crow (dog painting) and DAG (“Thelonius Monk”) are on display in Davidson this month.

The artists behind two exhibits currently on view in Davidson will be in the spotlight at receptions this week. On Wednesday night, Summit Coffee on Main Street will host a reception for David Alan Goldberg, who goes by “DAG,” and his exhibit “Carolina Revelries: Legends and Landmarks.” And on Friday afternoon, there’s a reception at Davidson Town Hall for painter Mary Crow, whose work is there this month. Also coming up: Mooresville Artist Guild’s 35th annual Spring Artfest.

Lia Newman
Davidson College has hired Lia Newman as director of the William H. Van Every/Edward M. Smith Galleries at Belk Visual Arts Center in downtown Davidson. She starts her job Jan. 2, and comes to Davidson from Artspace Inc., in Raleigh, where she has been director of programs and exhibitions since 2002.
Ms. Newman is a permanent replacement for previous director Brad Thomas, who left last January for a job at the Mint Museum. Read the full story
