Lawing in music—are joining forces again on production that first brought them together 34 years ago. In 1979 these then-young members of the faculty produced the romantic musical comedy “Guys and Dolls” on the Davidson stage as their first collaboration.
Last night as I sliced jalapenos for dinner, the burn from the juice trapped under my rings sent me straight for the kitchen sink where I couldn’t lather up fast enough and get them off my finger. It was then that the unthinkable happened. One of my bands slipped right out of my hand and took a nose dive for the drain. As I watched it fly through the air in slow motion and disappear under bubbles, a whole range of emotions poured over me. From shock and horror, to utter disbelief, to wondering if plumbers fish rings out regularly … only to calmly turn the water off, wait for the bubbles to subside, and discover my ring on the stem of the very jalapeno I sliced dangling precariously over the edge of the abyss. In the words of Mary Chapin Carpenter, “Mmmmm, I feel lucky today.” Indeed, I did! And, it really made me think, as we embrace our inner Leprechaun and decide which green outfit to wear this St. Paddy’s Day, that we all have moments of luck punctuating our time on the planet.
Our community calendar this week is filled with fun and fundraisers, including two road races on Saturday, the Angels of ’97 5K and spaghetti dinner in daylight, and Summit Coffee’s Leprechaun Loop 8K in the evening. Public meetings include Wednesday night’s Lake Norman Transportation Commission meeting on the I-77 widening project, and Democratic precinct meetings in both Davidson and Cornelius Thursday. There are concerts at Davidson College and live music in local clubs. And Friday night brings another in the series of ‘Tawba Walk art crawls in downtown Cornelius. And don’t forget St. Patrick’s Day: The region’s biggest party will be at Galway Hooker Irish Pub in Kenton Place, where they’ll have live music, along with plenty of food and drink both Saturday and Sunday this year. Read on for all the details.
Don and Divina Cook have produced another powerful drama, currently on stage at The Warehouse for Performing Arts in Cornelius. The intriguing psycho-drama, “Crimes of Omission” was written by Don, and his wife, Divina, frequently seen on stage, is the director. Their collaborations invariably lead to success.
