A pair of plays carrying a message, a day of fine Italian cookies for a cause, and a look at the works of Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini highlight this week’s activities and events around the area.

“In The Blood,” a modern-day take on “The Scarlet Letter” written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan Lori-Parks, opens a five-performance run on Wednesday night at Davidson College’s Duke Family Performance Hall. The play runs through Sunday. Continue Reading

The eagerly-awaited film “The Hunger Games” opened with a series of sold-out midnight shows Thursday night at Our Town Cinemas. Then dozens of fans came to the moviehouse in Sadler Square Friday night for an autograph session with the film’s local stars – actors who landed roles as extras in the film.

“The fans and our movie stars were excited. It was quite a success,” said Our Town Cinemas’ Jan Black.

A Revolutionary War encampment at Legion Park, a lecture by the editor of The New York Times, and the Davidson Farmer’s Market’s final winter tailgate market Saturday are on the schedule in and around Cornelius this weekend. “Stones in His Pockets” wraps up its run at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. And “The Hunger Games” opens at area theaters, including Our Town Cinemas in Davidson, where Thursday midnight shows are already sold out.
