Huntersville Brass plays at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church
It’s Halloween weekend, with the Downtown Davidson Halloween March, a Ghost Walk at Latta Plantation, and the Davidson Historical Society’s Ghost Stories at Beaver Dam, with storyteller Sauni Wood. Downtown Charlotte has a Halloween bar crawl and the Gravediggers Ball. The high school football regular season wraps up this week with a game between Hough and Mallard Creek for the I-Meck 4A title. The Cornelius Concert Series at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church hosts the Huntersville Brass Saturday. Lake Norman Christian School’s Autumn Blast is Saturday in Davidson, and several local middle-schoolers have organized their annual Think Pink Dog Show on the Davidson Green Saturday as well. Meanwhile, it’s Family Weekend at Davidson College, where events include the opening of the theater department’s production of “A Month in the Country,” free concerts by the Symphony and Chorale, and the Jazz Ensemble, and a Saturday football game vs. Butler. Our Town Cinemas in Davidson is showing “Argo,” “Paranormal Activity 4,” “Taken 2,” and “Hotel Transylvania.” Beginning Friday, “Chasing Mavericks” and “Fun Size” join the rotation. See showtimes on the right side of this page.

The Community Arts Project in Cornelius will offer a North Carolina-Style Face Jug Workshop on two Saturdays, Sept. 22 and Oct. 6, with instructor Loretta Banner.

Lakeside Drive opens the Cornelius Concert Series on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

This weekend you can expect fun outdoor activities, music performances and art. The Election 2012 themed
Amazing Maize Maze at Rural Hill in Huntersville is this weekend from Friday to Sunday.
The Green Day Festival, organized by the Davidson Lands Conservancy, is on Saturday and showcases companies, products and organizations that model sustainable practices and promote environmental awareness. The
Run for Green is part of the festival and includes a half marathon, 10K and 5K races. The Charlotte improvisational theatre group
Chuckleheads, will present their Comedy Improv Musical Variety Extravaganza on Saturday in Cornelius and the
Davidson Symphony and Jazz Ensemble will be playing at the Concert on the Green on Sunday. Saturday also is the first of two weekends of Bluegrass and BBQ at Cornelius Presbyterian Church, and local musician Rusty Knox plays Friday in Mooresville.

I recently stumbled across a new place – or rather, a new concept in an existing place. Carrie and I and another couple had reservations at 131 Main, off Statesville Road in Cornelius, but the restaurant was running a bit behind with our table so the hostess suggested that we check out their new place, Roxy’s Coffee & Wine, just 2 doors down from them at 9606 Bailey Road (where Dilworth Coffee used to be). We welcomed the suggestion, walked the 20 steps or so to Roxy’s, and quickly determined that the place has a super cool concept. Coffee AND Wine? Imagine Starbucks and the Corkscrew all rolled up into one, wonderfully inviting beverage shop.

Break out your calendars and put a big star on June 21 – not only is it the first official day of summer, it’s also the second annual LKN Summer Soirée!
Hosted by LKNFun and CLTFun, tickets to the all-inclusive event include drinks, food and music, and support a very good cause: my favorite, Little Smiles. I first learned about Little Smiles last year, when some of its volunteers approached me to help promote one of their charity events. The group’s mission is to bring “little smiles” to children in hospitals, hospice and shelters. Those “smiles” take many forms – from toys and games to outings and events – and all are provided by volunteers. In providing those things, the organization helps children escape their everyday pain and allow them to just be kids again, even if it is for only a short period of time. Read the full story
