If you’ve been on Main Street almost any evening this summer, you’ve probably seen groups of people wandering among the old buildings, into the cemetery and through the Davidson College campus. These weren’t folks on the usual college admissions tours. Instead, they’ve been among the first to check out one of our town’s newest activities: Virginia Grzech’s Ghost Walk of Davidson. It’s a busy weekend in and around Davidson, with visual arts events, sports, live music, and public meetings. The 2nd Shalom Lake Norman Jewish Festival is Sunday at Ramsey Creek Park. The weekend kicks off Thursday night with an opening reception and gallery talk for Davidson College’s annual faculty art show, at the Belk Visual Arts Center. Then on Friday, downtown Concord hosts an “Art Walk,” including the Galleries in Cabarrus County’s historic courthouse, where two new exhibits will open. With Davidson students back in town, life is returning to campus this week. The week kicks off with a much-anticipated campus concert featuring Maroon 5. “American Idol” winner Kris Allen and British singer VV Brown are also on the bill. Wednesday brings the Freshman Cake Race, in which first-year students compete for cakes donated by local residents. The men’s soccer team takes on Pfeiffer in an exhibition game that night as well. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ Parent University will screen the movie “The Fat Boy Chronicles” and follow up with a discussion about bullying on Thursday Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Huntersville.
Bullying is an issue many young people face. A recent national study released by Youth Risk Behavior Survey showed the largest percentage of youth said they were bullied because of their body size.

Davidson College Freshman Orientation continues this weekend with daily events, including Friday’s “Farewell Lunch” for parents and Friday night’s Freshman Olympics. And look for those frosh walking through town Saturday morning during the annual “Service Walk.” Davidson men’s and women’s soccer kick off their seasons this weekend with home games: The men host N.C. State in an exhibition game on Saturday, and the women will face Wilmington on Sunday.
Local bluegrass combo Davidson Express plays Saturday morning at the Cornelius Presbyterian Church’s Bluegrass Saturdays series. And the lineup of live music at Summit Coffee on Main Street this weekend begins tonight with Summit Songwriters in the Round. Read the full story

United Family Services of Lake Norman will host a “Cruise for Change” on Lake Norman Saturday, Sept. 25, to raise money for local domestic violence programs. The cruise on Lake Norman features music, a silent auction, drinks and heavy hors d’oeuvres. It departs at 6:30 p.m. at Queens Landing, and ends at 10 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person, available at the United Family Services web site, www.unitedfamilyservices.org. Read the full story
