roducers Anne Lambert and Marla Brown are teaming up this month for another regional premiere, a production of Michele Lowe’s black-hearted comedy “The Smell of the Kill” at Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius. The production runs Sept. 20-Oct. 6, with shows Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and one matinee, on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2:30 p.m.
With a three-woman cast, it’s a small production described as “a tantalizing comedy that had Broadway audiences cheering.” Read the full story

The series begins Tuesday, Sept. 18, with DJ Whole Wheat, from Durham
Growing up in Connecticut and New York, Shanté Paradigm Smalls took lessons in classical singing. But her heart tugged her toward a different beat. She followed her passion through twists and turns until she settled firmly into the emerging music and culture of hip hop. She formed a hip hop performing group, published two albums and toured for several years. She also produced a large hip hop festival in New York City for four years. Read the full story

The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius presents the play “The Smell of the Kill” by Michele Lowe, opening on Thursday, Sept. 20, and running to Oct. 6. The townwide ReadDavidson kicks off its fall 2012 season on Friday with a live webcast with Ann Patchett, the author of this year’s book, “State of Wonder.” In Charlotte, the 48th anniversary Festival in the Park this weekend features food, live music, artists’ booths and kids’ activities. On Saturday, there is the Lake Norman Beer Fest and the Oyster and Shrimp Fest.
Meanwhile, Our Town Cinemas in Davidson has “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Last Ounce of Courage” and “2016: Obama’s America” on the schedule. See the movie showtimes at right. Read the full story

This week we welcome Harvey’s Bar & Grill to Cornelius. The restaurant got its start in the Vermillion Community in Huntersville, probably the toughest location for a restaurant/bar I’ve ever seen - over the tracks off Exit 23 and way off the beaten path.
The owners of Harvey’s are Luke and Charlie. After they took over from the four previous proprietors, who consistently lost money on the location, they turned it profitable in just a little over a month. How did they do it? As always there is a little magic involved but mostly through plenty of experience in the restaurant business, and an uncanny ability to connect with their customers and adjust according to their requests.
