This week is full of fun festivals, concerts and educational opportunities. Davidson Day School will be hosting the inaugural annual Maya at the Lago Conference this weekend, a gathering of more than 20 of the nation’s top Maya archeologists and scholars. The 18th annual Rural Hill Scottish Festival and Loch Norman Highland Games runs Friday through Sunday in Huntersville, with athletic competitions, music and dancing. There’s also a music festival at the U.S. National White Water Center and a rodeo in Charlotte this weekend. Davidson College is hosting a number of concerts and conferences. There’s a performance of Brahms’ Requiem on Monday, “A (musical) Trip Around the World” on Thursday and an oboe and piano concert on Friday. Tuesday is the Davidson Ben & Jerry’s free cone day. So, don’t forget to stop in and get some ice cream.

This week, Davidson College students present majors they designed themselves, the Cornelius Board of Commissioners is meeting and there’s the Spring Fling Car Auction. Activist Eli Clare comes to Davidson College to read from his work and speak about social justice issues, such as disability, race and gender. The film “Waiting for Superman,” an exploration of public education in the U.S., will be playing at Community School of Davidson on Monday and Tuesday. On stage, William Inge’s play “Bus Stop” will be performed at Davidson College on Wednesday, while “Stuart Little” continues its run at Armour Street Theater this weekend. On Thursday, supporters of a Cornelius Veterans’ monument will hold a fund-raising Gala of Honor. And Davidson hosts its annual April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl on Friday.

Opens Saturday at Armour Street Theater.
Cornelius Arts Center in the Oak Street Mill hosts a Camp Crawl Saturday previewing its summer art camps, and they’ll be giving away prizes. Rising country music star Cici Jansen performs Friday at Just Baked Cupcakes in the Oak Street Mill. On stage, Davidson College’s production of “Into the Woods” has its final performances this weekend while Davidson Community Players Connie Co. opens “Stuart Little” on Saturday. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools are closed on Friday for a teacher workday. Also, Davidson United Methodist Church hosts an egg hunt Sunday afternoon at Lake Norman YMCA waterfront. And the Cornelius Concert Series at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church presents a program of Appalachian music and stories Sunday night.

Choir of Christ Church Oxford Wednesday at St. Alban's

This week’s highlight in the region may be Wednesday’s concert at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church by Choir of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford. On Sunday, there’s an early Easter egg hunt on Sunday at the Lake Norman YMCA. Also Sunday, the Cornelius Concert Series presents singer Anna Uptain Denison with an interactive program titled “Old-Time Music and Stories of Appalachia.”
This week is full of theatrical productions and films. “Stuart Little” starts this weekend at Armour Street Theater, joining Davidson College’s “Into the Woods” on the local playbill. There’s also a play titled “Vesta” from Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region that explores the emotions and decisions a family must face through the end of a grandmother’s life. The movies “Race to Nowhere” and “Play Again,” about children and how today’s culture affects them, are both being screened on Tuesday.

Starting off the week, the Cornelius Town Board holds its regular meeting Monday night at Town Hall. Also Monday, the Future of the Library Task Force presents its recommendations to the county commission and library board. On Tuesday, North Meck Woman’s Club will present a Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Peninsula Club. The Davidson College theater and music departments will join forces to present “Into the Woods,” starting Friday and ending April 2.

The Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg invites the public to a pancake breakfast, live auction and talent show this Saturday, March 5. Pancakes, sausage and all the fixin’s will be served from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Bethel Presbyterian Church gym on Bethel Church Road in Cornelius. The cost is $10 at the door. Read the full story
