Egg hunts, literary events and bass fishing on the lake

this week bugEaster-related activities fill the schedule this week around the area, from egg-decorating and egg hunts to Easter week and Easter Sunday services. Our calendar also includes a wide range of activities from bass fishing to theater. Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks speaks at Davidson College Tuesday night. And some of the world’s top professional bass anglers will hit Lake Norman this weekend for the three-day Bassmasters Southern Open, with boats leaving from Blythe Landing. Weigh-ins will be held the first two days at Blythe Landing, the final day at Concord’s Bass Pro Shops.

Discovery Place Kids in Huntersville has themed this week’s Fun Friday “Eggstravaganza,” with an egg hunt and Easter egg decorating, while the Historic Rural Hill Farm in Huntersville will hold its annual Community Egg Hunt on Saturday morning. In other activities this week:

  • The Davidson Public Library begins its “It Was a Book First” movie series on Wednesday with a free showing of “The Adventures of Tintin.”
  • The Birdnest in downtown Davidson will host a performance Friday night by the Mike Strauss Band with special guests Junestar. A portion of ticket sales will go to Habitat for Humanity.

Bassmasters Southern Open, April 5-7, Blythe Landing, 15901 N.C. 73, Cornelius. The second-annual Bassmasters Southern Open professional bass fishing tournament will launch each day at 7 a.m. from Blythe Landing, with weigh ins on April 5-6 at Blythe Landing and 4 p.m. April 7 at Bass Pro Shops, 8181 Concord Mills Boulevard, Concord. Admission to each day’s launching and weigh ins is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The public is invited to a lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks on “The Art of Making Art,” a presentation that is part lecture, part reading, part singalong, and part consciousness raising. Ben and Jerry’s Free Cone Day, 12-8 p.m., Ben and Jerry’s, 202 S. Main St., Davidson. Ben and Jerry’s annual free givaway allows the public to sample some of the famed ice cream maker’s newest flavors. Some of the flavors being offered are Chocolate Nougat Crunch, Banana Peanut Butter, Blueberry Vanilla Graham, Raspberry Fudge Chunk, and Vanilla. The Davidson Ben and Jerry’s shop will partner with ECAC as the store’s non-profit charity for 2012.
