Mark your calendars, friends, and head to the Kilted Buffalo Tuesday night. Enjoy tasty beverages served to you by your friendly neighborhood Nate’s Notes columnist, while proceeds from the evening benefit a nonprofit organization that is near and dear to my heart: Little Smiles.
I first learned about Little Smiles last year, when some of its volunteers approached me to help promote one of their charity events. The group’s mission is to bring “little smiles” to children in hospitals, hospice and shelters. Those “smiles” take many forms – from toys and games to outings and events – and all are provided by volunteers. In providing those things, the organization helps children escape their everyday pain and allow them to just be kids again, even if it is for only a short period of time.
The volunteer-only group works with hospital and shelter staff to identify needs, and provides immediate, and hands-on service to local children. They serve not only hospitalized children at Levine, Ronald McDonald House, etc., but also hospice patients and underprivileged children, like those in Barium Springs and other shelters. They address immediate needs better than any charity I have ever worked with. In fact, I was so impressed by the organization that I made Little Smiles the official charity for my business, LKNfun.
So, after selecting it as LKNFun’s official charity, the next step for me was to find ways to help support the group. That’s where Tuesday’s event comes in.
I met with Shawn Shrader of the Kilted Buffalo in Birkdale, who invited me to guest bartend, with all of the tips going directly to Little Smiles.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Kilted Buffalo, it is a contemporary men’s barbershop and classic neighborhood pub. I know, it seems like a bit of an odd combination, but ask yourself this: Where else can you go to get a haircut, grab a beer, and enjoy bar games all under one roof? The answer: nowhere else.
And don’t assume it’s a guys-only hangout. Every time I’ve been, the bar area has been packed with both men and women.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: People are always looking for something different, comfortable, a place they can call their “Home Pub,” and that’s exactly what the Kilted Buffalo delivers.
The barbershop/pub is just slightly off the main drag of Birkdale, located between the Gap and American Eagle, instead of tourist traffic, you’ll find local friendly faces who know what’s what.
The Kilted Buffalo has more than 40 different beers to choose from and a great wine selection as well. And since they don’t serve mixed drinks, you don’t have to worry about me mixing your cocktail incorrectly. I certainly think I can handle opening beers and pouring wine (I hope!). And in between pours, I hope to meet those of you, readers of my column, who I don’t know yet.
So if you are looking for a good reason to try a new place out, or to return to one of your favorite spots, all while giving back to the local community, come join me Tuesday, and bring a few extra bucks to throw into the jar so we can continue to put smiles on the faces of local children in need.
