Karen Bentley was re-elected in Mecklenburg County Commission District 1.
Voters handed the Democrats a 6-3 majority on the Mecklenburg County Commission Tuesday, including a sweep of all three vacant at-large seats.
Democrats Pat Cotham (19.8 percent), Kim Ratliff (19.6 percent) and Trevor Fuller (19.1 percent) won the three at-large seats. Those seats were left vacant when current County Commission Chair Harold Cogdell Jr. decided not to run and commissioners Jennifer Roberts and JIm Pendergraph decided to run for the 9th Congressional district seat. Two of the three candidates for the 9th Congressional District seat – Jennifer Roberts and Curtis Campbell – will answer voters’ questions during an election forum Thursday night, Oct. 11, at Davidson College. Former Republican state Sen. Robert Pittenger has opted out, saying he plans to campaign elsewhere in the district that night. Early voting for the May 8 primary elections in Mecklenburg County expands this week to Cornelius Town Hall, the Huntersville library and other public buildings around the county.
Voters may cast ballots in contests for the Republican nominations for the 9th Congressional District and state Senate, Democratic and Republican nominations for Mecklenburg County Commission at-large seats, and a Democratic primary in Mecklenburg County Commission District 1, which includes north Mecklenburg. At the top of the ballot are Presidential primaries for the Libertarian and Republican parties. Also on the ballot is a proposal to amend the N.C. Constitution to define marriage as being between only a man and a woman.

12 Dems, 4 Republicans, 1 Libertarian seek at-large seats; Bentley to face Democratic challenge for District 1 seat
The Mecklenburg County Commission will be looking a lot different next year. Four commissioners have decided not to run for re-election and several candidates are lining up for their seats. One commissioner is also getting a rare primary challenge.
