Former District 41 state senate candidates Troy Stafford and Robby Benton this week said they endorse Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte for the seat. After a close finish in the primary election May 8, Mayor Tarte and Huntersville business owner John Aneralla will face each other for a runoff vote in July, and Mr. Stafford and Mr. Benton are encouraging their supporters to vote for Mayor Tarte.
Mayor Tarte got 37.6 percent of the primary vote, while Mr. Aneralla got 36.2., according to unofficial returns, which means neither got the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff.
The men are vying to represent a new district covering Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Matthews Mint Hill and parts of southeast Charlotte. The runoff doubles as the deciding vote, as no Democrats or Independents registered to run in the district, which means either Mr. Aneralla or Mayor Tarte will become the area’s new state senator.
Here’s the press release Mayor Tarte issued Tuesday:
Cornelius NC~ Today the two leading former candidates for the NC Senate District 41 seat Robby Benton of Huntersville and Troy Stafford of Cornelius have released their endorsement of Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte. Mr. Benton and Mr. Stafford state that, “Mayor Jeff Tarte is the clear choice to rally behind and the leader we need in the NC Senate.” With this endorsement they are making requests of all the residents who voted for them to support Mayor Jeff Tarte in the July 17th run-off.
Mayor Jeff Tarte finished first in the primary election on May 8th with 38% of the vote. Benton and Stafford garnered nearly 20% percent of the vote on the 8th. With this endorsement, conservative voters can be confident in the candidate that a majority of the electorate would have voted for on Election Day.
“It’s all about experience,” said former candidate and attorney Troy Stafford. “Mayor Jeff Tarte’s accomplishments as Mayor of Cornelius make him the most qualified candidate for State Senate. His ability to cut taxes, achieve a AAA bond rating, and put $11 Million into reserves all while still providing needed services is exactly the type of reform our state government needs.
“Jeff Tarte has been a very effective Mayor for businesses in NC. I also believe he will be the best Senator for business growth as our next State Senator for District 41,” said NASCAR team owner Robby Benton. “Mayor Tarte eliminated useless regulations and burdensome business taxes as Mayor of Cornelius. With no hesitation, his credentials and accomplishments make Mayor Jeff Tarte the clear choice. I’m proud to not only endorse, but help promote Mayor Tarte’s run-off campaign.”
Both former candidates openly acknowledge that Mayor Jeff Tarte has been the first elected official to address the faulty revaluation process. He remains the leader for county-wide residents in this effort to help fix the tax revaluation process. “It is pure and simple that Mayor Jeff Tarte is the leader who can help elderly citizens stay in their homes. You have to vote for Mayor Jeff Tarte for State Senate,” said Mr. Stafford.
“I am proud to have the support of Robby and Troy as we move into the run-off. They have been wonderful candidates who have demonstrated respect for our electoral process,” said Tarte. “Join us as we work together to fix Raleigh by voting to Mayor Jeff Tarte for State Senate”
