More than 700 runners joined in for the Run Wild 5K and Wild Child Fun Run in Huntersville’s Birkdale neighborhood Saturday, raising $30,000 for the African Children’s Project. Davidson-based Olympian Anthony Famiglietti won the race in one of the fastest 5K times in the area in recent memory. Claire Naisby of Davidson won the women’s division. The Jetton Park Triathlon 2013 is scheduled this Saturday, May 11, at Jetton Park on Lake Norman. The event, organized by Wakeman Charities to benefit Brookstone Schools and Hope House Foundation, will bring some lane closures in the park area. Read the full story

The annual “Miles for Marnie” 5K race will require the closing of South Street and a portion of Lorimer Road on Saturday, April 27.
From 7:30 to 8:30am, the town will close South Street from Main Street south to the Antiquity Cornelius covered bridge. Read the full story

A crisp spring morning and cash prizes welcomed runners to the inaugural American Two Mile Road Race at Jetton Park in Cornelius. The road through the park was a “phenomenal setup” for the approximately 70 local and out-of-state athletes, according to organizers. Two partners in a local athletic clothing business – one a former U.S. Olympian – have teamed up to stage a big race Saturday in Cornelius that’s the first of its kind in the area. Good weather and a good cause brought 639 runners and about 100 more spectators to downtown Davidson for the Leprechaun Loop 8K road race and festival. The crowd for the race was almost three times as big as last year’s. Read the full story

The annual Angels of ’97 5K run and spaghetti dinner fundraiser is coming up this Saturday, March 16, at North Mecklenburg High School. The event is one of a series of annual fundraisers for the faith-based scholarship organization, established in memory of five local students who died before graduating in the class of 1997. Saturday’s Run Too Overcome attracted more than 250 runners for 5K and 10K races in downtown Davidson and dozens more for a 1-mile kids’ fun run. The event raised money and awareness for special needs education in area schools. The highlight of the day was a blazing victory in the 5K by U.S. Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti, who lives and trains in Davidson. See the story in SPORTS»
