I-77 southbound was closed near Exit 30 in Davidson Thursday night because of a multiple-vehicle accident just south of the interchange. Nobody was seriously hurt in the wreck, but a fuel spill kept the road closed for about 90 minutes, and one lane remained blocked until the early hours of Friday, the NC Department of Transportation said. Witnesses to a fatal crash on Statesville Road Tuesday told police they saw one of the cars weaving and cross the center line just before the wreck. Cornelius police are still investigating the three-car crash, which killed a 76-year-old driver. Also this week, police are investigating a case of fraud at the Regions Bank branch, in which a 57-year-old woman allegedly improperly cashed checks totaling $9,200. Meanwhile, a Huntersville woman has been charge with felony assault after a Smith Circle man told police he was injured after several suspects attacked him with a baseball bat last Friday.
FATAL CRASH REPORT
Police have released new information about that fatal car crash on Statesville Road Tuesday morning. The wreck happened around 8:22 a.m. on Statesville Road near the U-Haul mini-storage. Three cars were involved, all driven by Cornelius residents.
Witnesses told police they saw a 2002 Chevy headed south on U.S. 21/Statesville Road just before the crash, weaving and crossing the center line. The Chevy, driven by a 42-year-old Cornelius woman, then crossed the center line again and struck two cars heading toward her in the northbound lane.
The Chevy then veered off the right side of the southbound lane. The two other vehicles wound up off the right side of the northbound lane.
Frances Edmund, 76, of Huntersville, was in the first car to be hit, a 2004 Toyota. She was taken by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center in Huntersville, where she died of her injuries.
The third driver, a 77-year-old Cornelius woman in a 2013 Chrysler, also was injured. The other two drivers also were treated at local hospitals for their injuries.
A police spokeswoman said Thursday that no charges have been filed in the crash, but an investigation is continuing.
INCIDENT AND ACCIDENT REPORTS
FRIDAY, OCT. 19, 10:27 a.m., Jetton Road and Old Jetton Road – A 22-year-old Davidson woman and a 47-year-old Cornelius driver collided at the intersection. The Davidson woman told police she was headed west on Old Jetton Road, and mae a left turn onto Jetton Road, striking the second car in the passenger side door as she headed north on Jetton. Nobody was seriously hurt and no charges were filed.
FRIDAY, OCT 19, 10:45 a.m., Puppy Luv, 18505 Statesville Road – The owner told police that someone used his business debit card information to make several unauthorized purchases in the Charlotte area, as well as in Arizona and Missouri. Police are investigating.
FRIDAY, OCT. 19, 11:42 a.m., police headquarters – A 20-year-old Cornelius man came in to report that someone had robbed him the day before. The man said he was at the Kangaroo Gas Station at 20008 W. Catawba Ave. on Thursday around 9:30 p.m. when an unknown suspect stole $250. Police are investigating.
FRIDAY, OCT. 19, 3:13 p.m., 19500 Block of Smith Circle – Police were called to the apartment for a report of an assault. A 47-year-old resident told police he was attacked by several suspects, who hit him in the head and body with a metal baseball bat and metal pipe. The man was treated at Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville for facial injuries. A Huntersville woman was later arrested. (See next item.)
FRIDAY, OCT. 19,, 8:26 p.m., 13000 block of Central Ave., Huntersville – Cornelius police arrested 42-year-old Michelle Barnes and charged her with assault with a deadly weapon and inflicting serious injury, in connection with an attack on a Smith Circle man earlier in the day. She was being held in Mecklenburg County Jail, with bail set at $23,000.
FRIDAY, OCT. 19, 10:14 p.m., police headquarters – A resident of Westmoreland Farm Road in Davidson reported that between 2:20 and 4 p.m., someone stole his 14-year-old son’s iPhone and cover, worth $250, from the locker room at Hough High School.
SATURDAY, OCT. 20, 7:44 a.m., 19000 block of Spring Blossom Lane – Someone stole a 2005 black Chevy Silverado from the driveway, the owner told police. The theft happened sometime overnight. The theft is under investigation.
SATURDAY, OCT. 20, 9:53 p.m., Peninsula Club, 19101 Peninsula Club Drive – Two women reported thefts from the locker room. One lost $42 and the other lost $48 from a wallet.
SATURDAY, OCT. 20, 9:30 p.m., Jetton Park parking area – A 16-year-old resident told police that while her car was in the parking lot around 9:10 p.m., someone entered her 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser and stole a multi-colored Coach clutch bag with her driver`s license and bank card.
SATURDAY, OCT. 20, 8900 block of Forrest Shadow Circle – Police were called to check on a complaint about a possible underage drinking party. An investigation found three Hough High School students who were under the age of 21 and drinking. All three were issued citations for underage consumption of alcohol. Two of the three are members of the Hough varsity football team.
SUNDAY, OCT. 21, 4:15 p.m., Presbyterian Huntersville Hospital – A 35-year-old Mooresville woman reported that the person who was supposed to be taking care of her 59-year-old father, who lives in Cornelius, had not been taking care of him. Police are investigating.
SUNDAY, OCT. 21, 3:33 p.m., 19900 block of Norman Colony Road – A resident told police that between 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday, unknown suspect(s) damaged her mailbox, smashed a a pumpkin on her front steps and stole a Halloween yard decoration. Damage was put at $102 and the stolen decoration was valued at $40.
MONDAY, OCT. 22, 12:43 p.m., Ass Clown Brewing, Bailey Road – A company official reported that between Saturday evening and Sunday night, someone siphoned 11 lbs. of R-22 refrigerant gas from the rear condensing unit of the business. The gas was valued at $825.
TUESDAY, OCT. 23 6:08 a.m., 18500 block of The Commons Blvd. – A resident reported that someone entered her unlocked 1995 Ford Ranger and took a cardboard box containing a Black & Decker electric drill and batteries, flashlights, a hardwire touchpad, and a wireless keypad. The items were valued at $478.
TUESDAY, OCT. 23, 10:40 a.m., Regions Bank, 19430 W. Catawba Ave. – A bank official reported that on Oct. 16 at 3:49 p.m., a known suspect used a fraudulent ID card to cash two checks – one for $3,000 and one for $6,200. Police named a 57-year-old woman as a suspect and are investigating.
TUESDAY, OCT. 23,, 8:12 p.m., Gem Street – A woman reported that a man she knows had tried repeatedly to contact her in violation of a domestic restraining order. The man was charged with violation of the order.
TUESDAY, OCT. 23, 11:30 p.m., 18600 Block of Northline Drive – A resident reported that someone broke into his Chevy Trailblazer betwen 9:30 and 11 p.m., and stole an audio CD, valued at $20, and a wristwatch, valued at $5.00.

A Huntersville woman died Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash in the 19100 block of Statesville Road/U.S. 21 in Cornelius.
Police and Medic units responded to a report of a 3-vehicle wreck at around 8:24 a.m. Tuesday on Statesville Road, near the U-Haul mini-storage. Officers found several people with injuries.
One driver, Frances Edmund of Huntersville, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Huntersville, and later died of her injuries. The other two drivers also were being treated at local hospitals for their injuries.
Cornelius police released no other information and said the crash is still under investigation.

Police and firefighters responded to two wrecks Saturday afternoon in Davidson. In the first, on I-77 near Exit 30, a woman driver was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries after her car ran into a tractor-trailer. Nobody was hurt in a second wreck a few minutes later, when a car overturned on Davidson-Concord Road. Story on DavidsonNews.net.

Police investigated a dozen reports of auto break-ins in neighborhoods off Bethel Church Road last week, many involving locked cars. Two cars were damaged but nobody was hurt Saturday morning in a collision at Statesville and Westmoreland roads, where one car apparently turned in front of another. And a 29-year-old Charlotte driver hit a telephone pole on North Main Street Wednesday morning, telling police he swerved to avoid a car coming in the opposite direction.
