The experience of arriving at a behavioral health hospital can be difficult for patients in mental distress. But a Davidson College art student has changed the picture at Carolinas HealthCare System Behavioral Health Hospital off NC 73 in Davidson.

Stewy Robertson, who graduated from Davidson this month, was at the hospital this week painting a colorful landscape on the walls of the hospital’s sally port, which is the first thing patients see when they arrive.

The fifth in a series of quarterly ‘Tawba Walk Music & Arts Festivals is coming up Friday night in downtown Cornelius. This one brings the opening of a new Catawba Avenue art space – Brick Row – as well as a healthy menu of music, art, food and fun. Organizers expect their biggest crowd yet since the ‘Tawba Walk gatherings started last year.

The ‘Tawba Walk V runs from 6-10pm along Catawba Avenue, the Town Hall Parking lot, and around the Oak Street Mill, behind the police station. More than 50 vendors have signed up, including local artisans and businesses. They’ll also have live music, art, and food trucks (see the list below). Read the full story

The Cornelius Cultural Arts Group, a new non-profit focused on transforming downtown Cornelius into a hub for local artists and small businesses, plans to install a temporary public art piece soon at an abandoned Catawba Avenue storefront that has long been an eyesore downtown.

The building at 21314 Catawba Avenue, next to The Olive Branch, is scheduled for a renovation soon. The mural by Cornelius artist Elie Bou Zeidan is designed to improve the view while the work is under way. Read the full story
