With a wreath laying, honor guards, and a moving bugle solo of “Taps,” several hundred people remembered America’s war dead during a Memorial Day service Monday morning in Cornelius. The American Legion Post 86 in Cornelius will host a Memorial Day celebration Monday, May 28. The event begins at 11 a.m. at the Cornelius Veterans Memorial Monument at Rotary Plaza, on N.C. 115 near Town Hall.
Plans are still being finalized, Post 86 Commander John Washam said, but the ceremony will include an invocation and benediction, the National Anthem, color guards from local high schools and a 21-gun salute. Commander Washam will lead the ceremony.

The program begins at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28 at the Veteran’s Monument, on N.C. 115 adjacent to Cornelius Town Hall. It is open to the public.

At the regular town board meeting Monday night, Cornelius firefighters presented to Mayor Jeff Tarte and the Board of Commissioners a check for $1644 to go towards construction of the Veterans Memorial Monument at Rotary Plaza. Read the full story

The town of Cornelius and American Legion Post 86 on Saturday remembered local residents who died fighting for our country. In a ceremony behind Town Hall, officials also broke ground for the Cornelius Veterans Monument at Rotary Plaza.
Local veterans, the Legion post, town officials, business owners, police and firefighters all chipped in over the past year with fund-raising for the monument. As of last week, they had raised $165,000. Read the full story

After a year of fundraising, the Town of Cornelius and American Legion Post 86 on Saturday will celebrate the groundbreaking for the Cornelius Veterans Monument at Rotary Plaza.
The groundbreaking is planned in conjunction with the town’s annual Memorial Day celebration, which begins at 11 a.m. at the monument site, on N.C. 115 behind Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave. Read the full story
