Area voters will be able to question candidates twice over the next two weeks when the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce hosts candidate forums in Davidson and Huntersville. The forums are this Thursday, Oct. 4, in Huntersville and next Thursday, Oct. 11, at Davidson College. The two candidates aiming to represent North Carolina’s 9th congressional district, which includes north Mecklenburg, held their first debate Wednesday afternoon. Republican Robert Pittenger and Democrat Jennifer Roberts are running to fill the open seat created by the retirement of Republican Sue Myrick. Election filings and announcements are continuing this week. On Monday, U.S. Rep Mel Watt, D-Charlotte, said he will seek re-election in the reconfigured 12th House District. Meanwhile, four-term Huntersville town commissioner Charles Jeter announced he will run for the new 92nd District seat in the N.C. House of Representatives. County Commissioner Jennifer Roberts announced Monday she plans to run for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 9th District. The seat is up for grabs with the departure of longtime U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick, who announced last week she would retire when her term ends. See that story on our Election 2012 page.

Also on the page: As candidate filing opened Monday, John Aneralla filed to run for the state Senate District 41 seat, and several people threw their hats into the county commission race.

U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick, R-Charlotte, said Tuesday she won’t seek re-election in the reconfigured ninth Congressional district. The district will now stretch from Union County north to south Iredell and includes Davidson and Cornelius. A redistricting plan unveiled Friday by the Republican chairs of the N.C. House and N.C. Senate Redistricting Committees would shift north Mecklenburg (including Davidson) out of the 12th Congressional district and into a reconfigured 9th District.
