By DAVID BORAKSDAVIDSON – A few years ago over coffee in downtown Davidson, I talked to Rabbi Michael Shields about the growth of his congregation and it search for a permanent home. He told me that Davidson seemed a natural location for Lake Norman’s Jewish community to put down permanent roots. Much has happened since then, including a merger of the local Reform and Conservative Congregations, and now the renamed Temple Kol Tikvah of Lake Norman has that long-dreamed of home. This Sunday, April 14, the congregation will dedicate the new synagogue at 605 South St. – the first permanent synagogue between Charlotte and Statesville. Read the full story

HUNTERSVILLE – Emergency sirens around Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station and Mountain Island Lake Hydro Station will be tested at midday on Wednesday, April 10. The nuclear plant sirens will sound for about three minutes beginning around 11:50am. Read the full story

The Cornelius Planning Board will meet Thursday, April 11, to take up two projects: Elevation Church‘s request for a rezoning that would allow it to use the old Palace Theater at Kenton Place, and the proposed Pender Pointe, a single-family home off John Connor Road in the Peninsula area. The Hugh Torance House & Store on Gilead Road in Huntersville, one of Mecklenburg County’s few surviving 18th century structures, will have an open house this Sunday, April 14, from 3 to 5pm. A formal public comment period is open through April 22 on the N.C. Department of Transportation’s plan to widen I-77 north of Charlotte by adding high-occupancy toll lanes, or HOT lanes. The Mecklenburg Union Metropolitan Planning Organization (MUMPO) plans public meetings Wednesday in Huntersville and Thursday in Charlotte as part of its effort to gather input on the plan.
