Town Board members on Monday voted 3-2 to withdraw their request that the state legislature approve a bill allowing for a 1-time shift to a 3-year term for Cornelius Commissioners elected in 2013. Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the bill text in March, but some have heard since from citizens who are not in favor of the decision and requested the topic be revisited. Cornelius Town Board members on Monday will discuss whether they want to shift from two-year commissioners’ terms to three-year terms. Commissioner Dave Gilroy at the last board meeting requested that the board consider the change as a way to boost voter participation and ensure continuity of knowledge on the board.
Just 10.2 percent of registered voters – less than 5 percent of Cornelius citizens – voted in the Nov. 8, 2011 elections. That turnout “is just not acceptable participation in our democracy,” Commissioner Gilroy said. Read the full story
