Cornelius town commissioners took time out from their meeting on loftier issues Monday night to honor the W.A. Hough High School girls soccer team on their recent North Carolina High School Athletic Association Division 4A championship and end-of-season national No. 1 ranking.
Hough Coach David Smith appeared before the board along with four players (most others were working or on vacation): Emmily Cowie, Emma Cangelosi, Katie Minogue and Alex Denny. (Warning to opponents: All four will be back next year.)
“This is incredible, two state championships and a national championship, ” Mayor Chuck Travis said. He then read a proclamation honoring the team.
In the NC High School Athletic Association girls’ 4A championship game on May 31, Hough beat Panther Creek 1-0 to claim the title – its second in three years. (See May 31, 2014, “Hough beats Panther Creek for 4A title on Carroll’s OT goal”)
Then a couple of weeks later, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America put Hough in the top spot in its year-end poll.
It also was the second time in three years the Huskies earned a No. 1 ranking in the US.
As he shook hands with the players at the end of the ceremony, Mayor Travis put the pressure on: “We look forward to another championship next year.”
