Cornelius-Lemley Fire Department will host a chicken barbecue dinner on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11am until the food’s gone, at Fire Station No. 1, 19729 S. Main St. The annual event is a chance to tour the station, talk to firefighters, and meet your neighbors.
An $8 ticket gets you chicken, beans, dessert, and a drink. CorneliusFD.org
MT. ZION BARBECUE NOV. 2
The 74th Annual Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Barbecue is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 2, 11am to 6pm at the church, 19600 Zion Ave., Cornelius.
Tickets are $9 a plate (includes BBQ, yams, slaw, bread, dessert), $3 for a sandwich, or $10 for a pound of BBQ. Dine in or take out.
Proceeds from the barbecue will support local missions, including Helping Hands , Family Ministries, Serenity House, My Sister’s House, Appalachian Service Project, Mt. Zion Mission Trip to South Africa, and F.U.E.L. Youth Ministry.

In wave after wave, Cornelius Elementary School students circled a makeshift track behind the school Wednesday morning, having fun and raising money in the school’s annual FunRunners Fun Run in support of the Parent Teacher Organization. Kids collected pledges for the number of laps they ran, with proceeds going to this year’s PTO project: buying books for teachers’ classroom libraries.
Kids were led by classes onto the athletic field by Captain Awesome, one of the energetic leaders of the event from FundRunners, an Atlanta-based group that helps schools raise money through runs like this one. Read the full story
