Hundreds of cyclists are expected for Lake Norman’s 14th annual Polar Bear Ride on Saturday, Jan. 14, in Davidson. The Rocky River Road Club sponsors the half and full metric century bicycle rides through the North Mecklenburg/Lake Norman area, as a fundraiser for Davidson’s Ada Jenkins Center. The Community Arts Project (CAP), a nonprofit visual arts organization in Cornelius, is working to raise $3,900 for a new electric kiln through the Arts and Science Council’s “Power 2 Give” website. The site allows organizations to post specific needs and requests for donations, and allows donors to easily contribute to those projects online. CAP has raised 23 percent of its goal thus far, and must raise the remaining 77 percent by mid-January. Read the full story

Friends of David Burns of Cornelius, a 1999 Davidson College grad and ex-Wildcat basketball player who passed away suddenly Oct. 29, have come together to help out as his family tries to adjust to life without him.
That effort includes seeking donations for a trust set up to aid his wife and three children. And Davidson College is in on the act as well: The trust will be be the beneficiary of Wednesday night’s Black Out Belk fundraiser, when the Davidson Wildcats men’s basketball team takes on Vanderbilt at Belk Arena. The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Our Towns Habitat for Humanity to raise money to build a Cornelius house in March. The project received a significant boost from Wells Fargo, that donated $30,000 and has guaranteed an additional $20,000 in matching grants. Read the full story

The North Mecklenburg Woman’s Club on Friday hosts its annual “Over the Table Top” holiday fundraiser at the Peninsula Club, 19101 Peninsula Club Drive in Cornelius. This year, the funds raised will benefit HAMMERS (Hands Around Mecklenburg/Mooresville Making Emergency Repairs Safely), an organization that aims to reduce the immediate threats to life, health and safety in homes owned and occupied by lower-income residents of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, and Mooresville. About 100 people bundled up Saturday morning and walked in support of the Ada Jenkins Center, a non-profit health and human services organization serving Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville and South Iredell. Individuals and teams gathered at the Antiquity neighborhood in Cornelius for a Walk-a-Thon fundraiser for the center, which last year served 19,454 individuals through its various programs.
