NASCAR isn’t the only racing story in the news. Cornelius resident Greg Cross, marketing manager for Penske Racing in Mooresville, is racing his way to a new fitness goal with sights set on qualifying for the Kona Ironman World Championship in 2015.
Before he can do that, however, he’ll have to train for his second Ironman in Panama City, FL, on Nov. 1, 2014, which he plans to do while raising money for a worthwhile cause. Choosing to benefit Children’s Tumor Foundation, Cross committed to raising $10,000 for the charity, whose mission according to its website “is dedicated to improving the health and well being of individuals and families affected by neurofibromatosis.” Read the full story

Horticulture students at North Mecklenburg High School will host their annual Fall Plant Sale this Saturday, from 9am to noon.
The sale will be at the Greenhouse behind the bus parking lot at the high school, 11201 Old Statesville Road (NC 115), Huntersville.
They’re selling pansies for $2 per 4-pack of pansies and $12 a flat. Snapdragons and veggies are $0.50 each. Download an order form here.

Cornelius-Lemley Fire Department will host a chicken barbecue dinner on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 11am until the food’s gone, at Fire Station No. 1, 19729 S. Main St. The annual event is a chance to tour the station, talk to firefighters, and meet your neighbors.

MT. ZION BARBECUE NOV. 2
The 74th Annual Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Barbecue is scheduled Saturday, Nov. 2, 11am to 6pm at the church, 19600 Zion Ave., Cornelius.
Tickets are $9 a plate (includes BBQ, yams, slaw, bread, dessert), $3 for a sandwich, or $10 for a pound of BBQ. Dine in or take out.
Proceeds from the barbecue will support local missions, including Helping Hands , Family Ministries, Serenity House, My Sister’s House, Appalachian Service Project, Mt. Zion Mission Trip to South Africa, and F.U.E.L. Youth Ministry.
