Boy Scouts from Troop 72 in Cornelius spent Saturday planting vegetables in the community garden across from Bethel Presbyterian Church, on Bethel Church Road.
This is the third year for the 1/4-acre garden, which is a community service project for the scouts. All food grown is donated to the Loaves & Fishes food pantries in Davidson and Huntersville, and the Angles & Sparrows and Bread of Life soup kitchens. In total over the past two years, the garden has yielded 4,500 pounds of produce annually. Read the full story

“When someone wins, we just shake hands and I don’t care if I lose”, says Alex Johnson, 8. He and other novice players, recently joined seasoned Chess Club members for four weeks of Chess After School Enrichment at Community School of Davidson.

A crowd came out to the Lake Norman YMCA on Lake Cornelius Saturday for the annual Family Fun Day. Activities included canoeing, archery, sports, bounce houses, face painting, and arts and crafts. The event also was a chance for the Y to promote its summer events, from day camps to the annual triathlon to adaptive water skiing, which allows people with disabilities to learn how to ski.

Cornelius Elementary recently named Carol Kinne as its teacher of the year and Carol Gentry as assistant of the year. Meanwhile, Pine Lake Prep’s robotics team is ready for another season of competition, not just in robotics, but with a new team video set to the tune “Harlem Shakes.” At W.A. Den 6 Webelo II’s in Pack 72 in Cornelius “crossed over” Friday night, Feb. 22, in an Arrow of Light ceremony that means they are now Boy Scouts.
The ceremony came during the annual Blue and Gold Banquet at the Lake Forest Church in Huntersville. All boys are rising 6th graders.
They’ll now join Boy Scout Troop 72.
