Despite the extreme heat, about 800 people turned out to Bailey Road Park Saturday evening for a Beach Bash.
Part of the Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Department’s Summer Concerts in the Park series, the event featured The North Tower Band, playing oldies, beach music, top-40 hits and funk.
In addition to the music, children enjoyed different activities, including the Coca-Cola Discovery vehicle with Wii games, a mist tent and surf simulator.
CorneliuNews.net was pleased to sponsor the event.

More than 130 children and more than 70 local boat hosts have signed up to participate in the seventh annual “Big Day at the Lake” event for the children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte program. The event takes place this Saturday, July 16, on Lake Norman and is made possible through donations from a large number of corporate sponsors, individual donors and volunteers.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer-based program that matches children with adult volunteers. The children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are primarily inner city children in low income, single parent families. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides them with caring adult mentors who expose them to new activities and experiences while fostering positive relationships.
Most of the children have never had the opportunity to go to Lake Norman to boat, swim or fish. Through Big Day, Lake Norman families serve as boat hosts and take the “Bigs” and “Littles” out for a morning of lake activities. Following these individual experiences aboard the boats, all the mentors, children and boat host families gather at Duke’s Energy Explorium for a cookout, including food, music from 107.9 The Link, a water slide, the Coca Cola Gaming Van, Bruster’s Ice Cream, and other fun picnic activities.
“The sponsorships and volunteer commitments we receive are amazing,” Cornelius resident Dave Yochum said. “Each year the event gains more momentum and the outpouring of generosity is more than we could have ever imagined.” Mr. Yochum is the editor of Business Today and Cornelius Today and started the Big Day at the Lake event seven years ago.
