He swam more than 40 feet to rescue a swimmer, who was having a heart attack. He helped bring the man to shore, where he received medical attention and lived.
“A lot of us enjoy the lake, it’s the jewel of our town,” Mr. McDowell said. “I want everyone to just think about what might be unexpected,” he said, and be ready to react if something bad happens.
U.S Coast Guard Captain Anthony Popiel presented the award to Mr. McDowell during the Town Board meeting Monday night, joined by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Mr. McDowell, who is also leader of Cub Scout Pack 72, was joined by his pack at the meeting.
