A driver was taken to the hospital Friday night after a spectacular accident on Zion Avenue in which his pickup truck knocked down a utility pole and then struck a house.
The accident happened around 10 p.m. as the man drove the pickup across the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks at Hickory Street, off N.C. 115 in downtown Cornelius. Police said the man was headed off N.C. 115 toward Zion Avenue when he crashed into an electric pole, snapping it in two.
The pickup then continued onto the lawn at 19746 Zion Ave., and smashed into the front of the 1-story home with white siding and black shutters.
Police said the man was alone in the vehicle and was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries, though they did not appear to be life-threatening.
Fire also units were called to the scene because sagging power lines and potential danger from a transformer on the utility pole.
