HUNTERSVILLE – Huntersville Police are investigating numerous thefts of copper tubing from air conditioning units in the Hamptons neighborhood, off Sam Furr Road. In all incidents, the suspect(s) removed the tops and fans of the units and cut out the copper coils from inside them, according to police.
The suspect(s) only stole the copper components inside the air conditioners, police say, and they believe the thefts to be related to the recent rise in copper prices across the country.
The Huntersville Police Department would like anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for these crimes to please contact Detective R.E. Rojas of the Criminal Investigations Division at 704-464-5346. All calls will be kept confidential.
Police advise citizens to leave all outside lighting turned on at night and to watch for any persons walking between or around houses, especially during late night or early morning hours. Citizens should call 911 immediately if they see any suspicious persons or vehicles in their neighborhood, police say.
