The Cornelius Historic Preservation Commission offers a guided walking tour, “South of Catawba,” Saturday at 10 a.m. Beginning at Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave., the tour covers about 11/4 miles and lasts 11/2 to 2 hours.
Along the way, walkers will learn when and how the town was incorporated, and the history of Cornelius Elementary School, Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Olde Mill Village, the Gem yarn mill and the cotton gin, among other historical landmarks.
The walking tour promotes the work of historic preservation, encourages exercise suitable for the entire family, educates students, townspeople, and visitors about the evolution of Cornelius, encourages activity in the town center and introduces walkers to businesses along the walking route.
