Grace Covenant students deliver bags of lunch – and love

Students at Grace Covenant Academy last week spread Valentine’s Day love by preparing 50 bagged lunches for homeless people in Charlotte. Meanwhile, the Community School of Davidson is set to receive accreditation this June, J.V. Washam Elementary students are collecting plastic bags and McKinney Academy students perform at Barnes & Noble in Birkdale. Also, North Mecklenburg High School and Cannon School plan open houses. 4 weekend DWI arrests, Village Apt. gunfire investigation

Police arrested four people for DWI over the weekend. Meanwhile, detectives continue to investigate after multiple gun shots were fired at the Village Apartments Thursday. Response: DOT official seeks meeting with Norfolk Southern

The N.C. Department of Transportation's top official working on the Red Line Regional Rail Project has sent a written response to Norfolk Southern Corp. welcoming the company's "active role" in the project and requesting a meeting where Red Line Task Force and railroad officials can "share new information" that will help planning the project.

In new letter, Norfolk Southern calls Red Line plan ‘fatally flawed’

21 February 2012

Updated 5:18 p.m. - The company, which owns the tracks north of Charlotte, says in a letter to the N.C. Department of Transportation that while it "stands ready to study" the project, it believes the current is "fatally flawed" and based on outdated assumptions. Red Line officials say they hope for a work session with Norfolk Southern. Task Force meets Wednesday.

Town Bd. considers temporary change to term lengths

21 February 2012

Town Board members are considering a temporary switch to either a 3-year term length or a 1-year term to align the town elections with the federal elections cycles. Currently, Commissioners serve 2-year terms, falling on odd-numbered years. Commissioner Dave Gilroy requested that the board consider the change as a way to boost voter participation at the local level, saying that people think more about voting during national election years.

‘Celebrate Smithville’ Sat. at Town Hall

The Town of Cornelius and the Smithville Community Coalition will host a celebration of Smithville Saturday at Town Hall, and all community members are invited to attend. Meanwhile, the Cornelius Rail Task Force will discuss Special Assessment Districts and Tax Increment Financing at its next meeting, Monday, Feb. 27. Also, the town seeks new members for its Transportation Advisory Board and encourages citizens to apply by the end of the month.

Commission to set hearing on fire districts, consider tax cap

21 February 2012

The Mecklenburg County Commission is scheduled to vote Tuesday night whether to cap the tax rate on proposed new fire tax districts in the unincorporated areas of the county and to to schedule an April 3 public hearing on the plan. As the region continues to grow, the county has been discussing changing the way fire service is paid for in areas beyond the borders of Davidson, Cornelius and other towns.
